B-Sides & Rarities

This exhibition documents a collection of conversations and introductions to music that I've shared with my children over the past decade.  Despite not playing an instrument myself, music has always played a constant role in my life and has acted as a soundtrack to life's trials and tribulations as well the quiet moments in between.  As a child I remember the music my parents would play in our house as well as the stories they would tell me about concerts they saw while living in California in the 1960s.  Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Joan Biaz, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles to name a few...  I still envy the performances they got to see. Since becoming a parent myself, I've sought to emulate this approach and try to introduce my children to a wide variety and breadth of music.  That being said, rock n roll and hip hop have always been the dominant genres in our home.  My kids are now at the age where they're developing their own sense of taste in music as well as they're beginning to question and understand the meaning and intention behind song lyrics.  Through this dialogue, we've had the opportunity to talk about heavy topics like race, politics, and social injustices based on the lyrics and language used, as well as life and death, and legacy if the musician has died.  Some of the drawings in this series are direct results of the songs we would talk about and the artists who sang them.
